Japan – Partner country of AIS SUMMIT 2013

Japan is an archipelago of 6,852 islands.

As a major economic power Japan has the world’s third-largest economy by nominal GDP and by purchasing power parity. It is also the world’s fourth-largest exporter and fourth-largest importer.
The naval history of Japan can be said to begin in early interactions with states on the Asian continent in the early centuries of the 1st millennium, reaching a pre-modern peak of activity during the 16th century, a time of cultural exchange with European powers and extensive trade with the Asian mainland.

In the shipping industy of Japan is a powerhouse.
There are more than 1000 ports in Japan and the merchant fleet owned by Japanese Ship owners is one of the largest in the World.
Japan also has a tradition of shipbuilding which goes back 200 years.
